Environmental Studies and Engineering

Heynen Engineers is hard at work keeping up with the numerous and far-reaching changes in federal and state regulations concerning environmental protection. This effort is indicative of Heynen Engineers commitment to providing comprehensive environmental consultation to property owners, potential buyers, lenders, attorneys and holding companies. Heynen Engineers full service environmental consulting ranges from cost-competitive Transaction Screens and Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) to Full-Scale Remedial System Designs.

Heynen Engineers Phase I ESA's and Transaction Screen's reference the ASTM E 1527-94, and ASTM E 1528-93 standards, respectively. The Phase I ESA is based on information obtained from site reconnaissance, interviews, and local, state and federal reviews, performed only by trained and experienced engineers and geologists.

Heynen Engineers Phase II ESA studies are designed for the specific concern of the site. Methods used to intrusively obtain subsurface data include soil vapor surveys, test borings, monitoring well installations, test pits and geophysical studies. Complex site conditions requiring explorations inside buildings, in dense woods, on steep terrain, around congested traffic, structures, or population and on wet surfaces are planned for and worked into the investigative methods chosen.

Contamination assessments are designed to use as much viable existing information and sampling locations as practicable to reduce costs. The investigation programs are designed by engineers, geologists and hydrogeologists based on the study's objectives and the client's resources.

Heynen Engineers prepares remedial action plans for source mitigation, ranging from simple excavations to complex multiple-phase treatment systems. The plans are designed by engineers and hydrogeologists to integrate remedial equipment capacity and performance with subsurface conditions and contaminant characteristics for maximum efficiency. The design, installation, startup, monitoring and closure of the system is carried out by trained and experienced staff engineers and technicians.

Environmental services are supplemented by in-house chemical analytical equipment reducing time and costs. Heynen Engineers operates an in-house portable Hnu 311 Gas Chromatograph used for analyzing gasoline-related hydrocarbon compounds and certain solvents in soil, water and air samples. In-house field screening equipment includes two photo ionization detectors to analyze total volatile organic compounds, and a Dexsil TPH kit to screen for total petroleum hydrocarbons in soil samples.
