Geotechnical Studies and Engineering

With the help of decades of professional experience, a reputable staff and in-house testing services, Heynen Engineers provides comprehensive geotechnical engineering services. These services are utilized for industrial, commercial and residential structures, dams, landfills, bridges, and other public and private developments. In addition, Heynen Engineers performs forensic studies, provides expert witness testimony, and peer reviews.

Heynen Engineers is retained to assist architects, developers, and other engineers in site evaluation and preparation of project plans and specifications for site development projects. This assistance is in the form of recommending a feasible foundation system or systems, pavements, slopes, and retaining structures with the necessary design parameters, evaluating reuse of on-site materials, and recommending appropriate earth work methodologies. Heynen Engineers recommendations are based on a site-specific exploration program, a comprehensive understanding of the site subsurface conditions, and decades of professional experience. Heynen Engineers evaluates integrating site conditions including locations, depths and characteristics of problem soils, groundwater, bedrock and suitable bearing strata with proposed development grades, bearing loads and required performance criteria.

Heynen Engineers is retained to provide engineering services for dams owned by states, municipalities, private companies and individuals. The engineering services can include inspection, compliance, repair and reconstruction design, permitting, and construction project management. Heynen Engineers in-house staff performs the stability, hydrologic, and hydraulic analyses and downstream channel evaluation. Heynen Engineers experience with New England and New York dams extends back to its intense involvement in the 1970's U.S. Corps of Engineers Dam Inspection Program initiative, which revolutionized dam regulations.

Heynen Engineers is experienced with studying landfills and providing engineering services for landfill closures throughout Connecticut and New York. Heynen Engineers assesses site and regional conditions to provide feasible alternatives in mitigating the effects of natural attenuation landfills and repairing malfunctioning cover, liner and leachate collection systems. Heynen Engineers has designed and inspected cover and liner systems made of low permeable soils, geomembranes and composite materials.

Given that non-engineered, outdated and even some engineered solutions fail, Heynen Engineers is retained to provide forensic geotechnical services to the cause of the failure, which sometimes results in providing expert witness testimony. In newly designed and construction solutions, Heynen Engineers is retained to provide peer reviews and second opinions to assess alternative solutions to meet budget and performance criteria.

Assessment of material properties is augmented by Heynen Engineers in-house testing laboratory. Granular and cohesive material properties are evaluated with up-to-date equipment operated by trained technicians using ASTM methods.
