Representative Projects

State of Connecticut

Heynen Engineers has performed geotechnical engineering services for proposed developments for the Department of Public Works and Department of Transportation over the past ten years. These projects include, for example, preparing geotechnical engineering reports for the construction of 15 new Department of Transportation salt storage facilities throughout the state, performing geotechnical engineering explorations and preparing recommendations for the construction of a correctional facility in Cheshire, and performing a comprehensive geotechnical and environmental investigation for the proposed Silver Sands State Park development to be constructed in the area of the existing landfill.

Dams

Heynen Engineers has extensive experience in subsurface explorations and underwater inspections, providing recommendations, preparing design drawings and contract documents, and providing construction inspection services for publicly and privately owned impoundment systems. Heynen Engineers has worked on several dam projects for the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, such as Lake Beseck Dam in Middlefield, Connecticut. Lake Beseck Dam included explorations through the crest of the 35-foot high masonry arch structure, design drawings for installation of an upstream low permeable barrier and construction inspection services.

Tall Structures

Heynen Engineers has performed subsurface explorations and prepared geotechnical engineering recommendations for several multi-level structures including a proposed parking garage and office tower in New Haven, Connecticut. The proposed development consisted of a 17-level office building and 5-level parking garage constructed on very loose and liquefiable sands. Guide specifications were prepared for slurry caisson, pressure injected footing and H-pile foundation systems.

Roadways

Heynen Engineers has prepared recommendations for roadway reconstruction for secondary roads, access roads and parking areas in accordance with applicable AASHTO requirements. As an example, Heynen Engineers prepared pavement section design recommendations for the reconstruction of a ¼-mile section of Thompson Avenue in East Haven, Connecticut. The existing roadway had experienced an advanced serviceability failure due to weak subgrade conditions. The explorations consisted of continuous sampling at specified centerline station intervals in order to assess suitable subgrade design parameters.

Commercial Developments

Heynen Engineers has performed subsurface explorations including extensive rock coring, comprehensive soil laboratory testing, report preparation and construction inspection as the geotechnical engineer on record for over one hundred commercial developments. Some of these projects were fifteen Wal-Mart developments, five K-Mart stores, several McDonald's restaurants, Sony Theaters, Walgreens, Lowe's Home Centers and other commercial structures ranging in size from 5,000 sf to 300,000 sf. These commercial projects included rock excavations of over 100,000 cubic yards, engineered fills of over 70 feet in height, geotextile earth retention and foundation support systems, surcharges with wick drain installations to depths of 80 feet and deep foundation support systems consisting of H-piles, timber piles and drilled caissons.

Residential Developments

Heynen Engineers has been retained to provide consultation for residential developments requiring geotechnical and hydrogeological services in order to assess potential impacts to existing neighboring developments as mandated by municipal requirements, and to assess estimated costs and reusability of earth and rock excavations. Heynen Engineers performed a hydrogeological study for a proposed residential development in East Haven, Connecticut to assess potential impacts from proposed rock excavations of over 100 feet in depth onto regional existing private drinking water wells.

Forensics

Heynen Engineers has performed geotechnical engineering services for the investigation of failed foundation systems. This work includes subsurface explorations, tiltmeter and displacement gauge installation, and monitoring and surveying in order to evaluate potential causes of foundation failures due to differential settlements. An example includes a 6-story brick structure in New Britain, Connecticut constructed circa 1900 which experienced over 6 inches of settlement in one corner of the building resulting in a 12-inch lateral deflection at the roof. Test borings and test pit explorations identified a localized zone of organic swamp deposits beneath one 30-foot long area of the perimeter footing. Design drawings for the implementation of pit pier construction repairs were prepared.

Landfill Closures

Heynen Engineers has performed site inspections consisting of subsurface explorations and hydrogeological studies for five municipal landfill projects in Essex County, New York. Heynen Engineers prepared design drawings and contract documents for three projects that reached the design phase. Heynen Engineers also performed field inspections and prepared landfill closure reports for two projects that advanced to the construction phase. These two construction phase projects included testing for geotextile and clay cover systems in accordance with Department of Environmental Conservation requirements.

Heynen Engineers has performed comprehensive hydrogeological studies for municipal landfills including the municipal landfill in Clinton, Connecticut, which included data compilation from monitoring well and electromagnetic survey data. Three-dimensional modeling was also performed in order to assess anticipated long-term leachate constituents and migratory behavior.

Since its inception in 1983, Heynen Engineers has performed a number of geotechnical engineering and environmental projects for a diverse group of clientele including:

  • Park Square West, Phase I and Phase II Heynen Engineers performed subsurface geotechnical and environmental explorations, prepared foundation design recommendations, and outlined environmental concerns and remediation liabilities for the two CorJen projects in Stamford, CT.

  • Elm Haven Redevelopment Project Heynen Engineers performed test borings, test pits, pavement corings, prepared foundation and earthwork recommendations for the demolition and reconstruction of an urban housing project and performed periodic site inspections during earthwork and foundation construction phases.

Commercial Space Vehicle Complex

Heynen Engineers performed subsurface explorations and prepared foundation and pavement design recommendations for the construction of a satellite launch facility at Cape Canaveral Air Station in Florida.

Lowe's Home Centers

Heynen Engineers performed subsurface explorations and prepared foundation and pavement design recommendations for the construction of a 150,000± square foot retail development, and performed full time construction monitoring and special inspection services for three facilities in Connecticut.

Clinton Crossings Premium Outlet Center

Heynen Engineers performed subsurface explorations and prepared foundation design recommendations, earthwork and blasting specifications, pavement designs, and performed full time construction monitoring and blast monitoring for a 41-acre retail shopping center.

Guilford Land Rover

Heynen Engineers reviewed subsurface exploration data and prepared recommendations for a deep foundation for a 6,000± sf automobile showroom and performed on-site inspection of pile installations.

Public Storage Facility

Heynen Engineers performed subsurface explorations and prepared foundation design recommendations for a three-story public storage facility and performed on-site construction monitoring services.

Bellevue Square Housing Development

Heynen Engineers performed subsurface explorations and prepared foundation design recommendations for the construction of an administration building and several retaining walls at an urban housing project.

In addition, Heynen Engineers has performed numerous Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, Contaminant Assessment reports and Remedial Action Plans. In addition Heynen Engineers has designed remediation systems for sites contaminated with gasoline and fuel oil-related hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, metals, and PCBs.
